WCHS Students Help Woman in Need with Ramp Build

Thirteen Windsor Central High School engineering students built a ramp onto the home of an 80-year-old homeowner in Johnson City on September 23 and 24. The students partnered with the Broome County Council of Church’s Ramp it Up Program on the project. This is the 21st ramp Windsor students have helped build during the partnership with the Ramp it Up program. This structure will give the wheelchair-bound homeowner the ability to finally leave her home. 

“I can get out of the house, is the big thing. I have a scooter and I can get around. I can get to my bank; I can get to the grocery store. I haven’t been able to up to now,” said homeowner Jean Chapin.

“I hope (the students) not only gain some skills and trades and get some teamwork working together, but also that community service aspect, and giving back to their community, and the good feeling it gives when you help somebody else out in need,” said WCHS engineering teacher Jason Dewey.

“It’s nice. I really like helping people. It’s nice to do something good and build a ramp for someone. Some people have mobility problems, and this is a really nice way to help them,” said WCHS engineering student Nathan Watkins.

“They’re really working hard. I didn’t know what to expect, but they’re doing a wonderful job,” said Chapin.
